The first five photopolymer prints that comprise this series are entitled “A Handful of Dust.” For years, the grim and gloomy mills of the old industrial centers in New England have fascinated me. Once thriving and booming commercial hubs of this nation, they tell a story. When the 2008 October “Lesser Depression” or “Great Recession” occurred on Wall Street with global ramifications, I decided that these mills of Western Massachusetts (specifically Chicopee and Easthampton in this case) were indeed a metaphor for this event. They document the cyclic nature of the “boom and bust” economies that continue to be a part of this country’s history and the oftentimes “Robber Barons” that helped to build such prosperous times.
